Solesides Mailing Lists

This page collects old messages from Mailing Lists which were used during the early 1990's. This page is primarily related to Solesides and their related acts such as DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, and Latryx. Several of these posts are also written by J. Winston Chiong who in 1997 ran the Solesides website and spent time with Lateef and Lyrics Born in their office.[1] Others are written by Oliver Wang, who was a fan but also reviewed several Solesides releases for the press,[2] and was able to preview new Solesides releases thanks to Jeff Chang.[3] Oliver Wang later interviews Jeff Chang about Chang's book in 2008.[4]

My man O-Dub let me know that people are trying to get with our stuff. Good looking out to him and all of you supporting us! We've just received national distribution, so you can tell your local record stores they can order Blackalicious and Solesides vinyl, CD and cassettes through the INDI Distribution network. Of course, this won't guarantee that the store will order it. So you can always order direct through us. Being the way we are, we're still selling stuff out the trunk and out the front of my apartment door-anyway we gotta! Write to us at: Solesides. P.O. Box 590, Davis, CA 95617-0590.

Blackalicious "Swan Lake"/"Lyric fathom" and the first Solesides EP, featuring DJ Shadow's "Entropy" and Asia Born's "Send Them" are now available. Blackalicious' EP "Melodica" will be released domestically in late January/early February. It is now available as a Solesides/Mo Wax import. The Japanese version will include "Changes".

We're just 8 broke college m.f.s who hope we can show it can be done independently and it's peeps like you that keep us going. So again, we really appreciate your support. Peace in '9-5.

7 Mar 1995 - Updated Notes: Solesides

Posted by Oliver S Wang on 27 Mar 1995[6]

I had the honor of hanging out and beat shopping with DJ Zen (aka Papa Zen) the unofficial mentor of the entire Solesides crew which includes Blackalicious. (Thank god...another ABC who's into hip hop!) Here's some basic updates on Solesides' sh*t: Asia Born:

  1. 1: He's called Lyrics Born now...his new moniker is quite widely

displayed on the "Deep in the Jungle" cut on "Melodica" (Blackalicious).

  1. 2: "Entropy" is hardly new, unless places are getting it on

reissue or even a much delayed first issue. The cut was on a joint Asia Born/DJ Shadow 12" that came out in '93 I think...or else early '94.

DJ Shadow: He's got a new 12" out..."What Does Your Soul Look Like?" parts I-IV. Rumor is that it's a "lazy DJs dream" given the amount of samples and change-ups Shadow puts into the tracks. If you've never heard his sh*t before...it's something else... Shadow is an abstract turntablist (to borrow the Mo Wax term)...another way that his production has been described is "thick" which seems very apt. Bottomline: Listening to his sh*t, you never notice he doesn't have lyrics over them. Especially look for the promo 12" of this single which is only smaller (10") vinyl. FAT.

Blackalicious: Currently, "Melodica" is still ONLY available on the import Mo Wax label. As I've mentioned in the past, DJs (i.e. us crazy people who have this affinity for playing pieces of plastic) should look to get this EP on import b/c it offers instrumentals for almost all the songs. The domestic version will NOT. But on the other hand, if you buy the domestic release, at least the artists will make some money off the CDs, tapes and LPs which they aren't really making now. As to the all important question of when will "Melodica" come out domestically? Zen sez: "Soon." ...and there it is... Oh yeah, there's supposed to be a Japanese import of "Melodica" that has an unreleased cut called "Changes" (hella fat!) but I haven't seen or heard about anywhere that's actually carried this particular import.

Lastly... Not to disagree with Flash (but I will) but I hardly would classify anyone in Solesides...or the entire Bay Area as being a product of any "LA underground freestyle movement". Kids like the Hieros were rapping their asses off long before Good Times (legendary, now closed, freestyle spot in LA) was in its heydey with Pharcyde in the house. Most of the Solesides crew are from the Bay Area, but went out to Davis to go to school/work. I'm not being territorial about it...I have deep respect to the Project Blowed posse that is leading the charge for cutting edge LA hip hop right now, along with King Tee's progenies (Alkaholiks, Mad Kap). But I've never heard of the Bay's current talent being a result of some northern migration.

Peace,

12 Jul 1995 - Blackalicious: Melodica is here!

Posted by Zen (aka Jeff Chang) on 12 Jul 1995[7]

Finally. It took too damn long, I admit, but we got the limited edition DJ vinyl in West Coast DJ stores this week and the CDs and cassettes ready to follow in all stores (through California Record Distributors) in about a month. In LA you can check Martin's, Street Sounds, Prime Cuts. In the Bay, check Zebra's, Amoeba's, Leopold's, Star, Cue's. More are coming as fast as we can get in our cars and drive there, you know what I'm sayin? The Melodica EP is the same as the import LP/CD (which cost fools a small fortune, I know) but it's got a new track, new cover art, no instrumentals. It's put together tight-ass just the way we wanted it to be. Plus it's hella cheap and hella better compared to Michael Jackson-Presley's Distory.

If you can't get it where you're at, ask your store to call us or order it by mail.

Solesides hotline: (916) 759-1304

We've got a new single from Blackalicious on the way with brand new B-side tracks fresh out the studio. They're kinda tired of this stuff cause they think it's hella old but you should listen to it and tell me. I don't think it is. E-mail here with your analog address to get on the snail-mailing list. Thanks for supporting independent hip hop and shit!

12 Sep 1995 - Notes on the Abbreviated Run

Oliver Wang had previously posted on September 9 that he was thinking of making a tape featuring early Solesides releases and some unreleased music,[8] and this post was a follow up to that. Posted by Oliver Wang on 12 Sep 1995[9]

Solesides tape update: As it turns out I will NOT be offering a Solesides mix tape mainly b/c Solesides will be offering their own around early October. Inside sources have it that DJ Shadow will mix together a Solesides melange of old and new tracks plus an underground mix of slept on tracks in the local areas.

It's also rumored that a lot of Shadow's Mo Wax stuff will be coming out on domestic rerelease if Mo Wax's US distribution plan takes off. For updates, refer yourselves to:

26 Jan 1996 - New Singles From SoleSides Records

Posted by NoJokeDOXX on 26 Jan 1996[12]

Just got a new promo single from SoleSides Records. The solo track from Lateef The Truth Speaker, "The Wreckoning" is amazing. There's also a track from Chief Xcel featuring Lateef, Lyrics Born, and Gift Of Gab from Blackalicious ("Fully Charged On Planet X"), a instrumental from DJ Shadow ("Hardcore Hip Hop"), and another track from Lateef featuring Lyrx Born ("Latyrx"). Lateef's "The Wreckoning" should be out within the next month or so on SoleSides while DJ Shadow and Chief Xcel's tracks will be released simultaneously in the US by SoleSides and in the UK by Mo Wax Records around March. Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled for these.

14 Feb 1996 - Asia Born

In reply to a post about Asian Born, Oliver Wang replied on 20 Feb 1996 with the following:[13]

(note bold text is quoted, the rest is his reply)

Yo, you think Mad Skillz and Raskass are the best freestylers in the hip-hop industry today, you need to check out Asia Born of the Solesides/Blackalicious crew. I just peeped a little freestyle he did on the very limited Solesides mix tape, and his shit was nice. His flow was wicked, much like Gift of Gab from Blackalicious. He definately has a way with words!!

      • Word...Lyrx Born has got an ill type flow and mad creativity.

Some sidenotes about this crew: 1) Lateef the Truth Speaker has a single called "The Wreckoning" coming out in the middle of February. The promo is only on vinyl, but they promised something special on the commercial release which should also be on cassette.(Maybe)

      • No, it should definitely be coming out commercially. Promos are due

out this Friday with commercial copies about two weeks after I would guess.

2) DJ Shadow is collaborating with Chief XL of Blackalicious and putting something out. Check for it soon.

      • It's actually a 12" with both artists. Chief XL has a cut called

"Fully Charged on Planet X" feat. Lyrx, Lateef and Gab. Shadow has an instrumental cut (a slammin one too) called "Hardcore" on the B-side.

Shadow's remix for Krush/Roots' "Meiso" is due out soon too...I know white label promos are floating out there so the actual product, on Mo Wax, should be out soon too. It'll be import only though for at least half a year.

3) Asia Born is putting something out in April 96.

      • Possibly...in fact, all of them might release full albums within a

year but it depends on how some business stuff works out. Definitely, look for the Lateef 12" with his pairing with Lyrx Born on the B. And check for Chief XL's cut too...butter.

For those in the Bay Area, peep out Radio Sole, featuring DJ Zen and Chief Xcel, every week on Mondays from 9-9:30pm on 90.7 FM.

Peace,

O

6 Jun 1996 - lateef, more.

During a discussion about Solesides J. Winston Chiong asked "does anyone know who Shadow is dissing in B-boy's Revenge? Lordz of Brooklyn?" and Jazzbo, a member of the Solesides crew at the time, posted a reply.[17]

All of SoleSides' shit is dope. But then again, I'm biased aren't I? Shadow wasn't dissing any group in particular...in fact, his exposition was a little ahead of his time. There was a news segment that came out in early '90, on 20/20 and i think BET might have picked it up, but it was about white italian kids in brooklyn forming a rap group. they were low on the notoriety scale, but it was still comedy and that's who shadow was makin' fun of. then lo and behold, a few years later...

6 Oct 1996 - Doctor Octagon a.k.a. Kool Keith

In reply to someones questions about DJ Shadow's involvement with the Doctor Octagon album, J. Winston Chiong posted the following on October 14 1996:[21]

As for Shadow: a lot of people don't know that DJ Shadow is actually a part of the Solesides crew, which has its own independent label out here in the Bay Area. (I've been interning for Solesides for the last couple months.) Mo'Wax picked up Shadow's instrumental stuff for UK release (I'm not familiar with the details of the deal between Mo'Wax and Solesides) after the first Solesides single (SS001: Send Them b/w Entropy) dropped in '93.

So if you want the track that really started it all off, you need to check "Entropy", which is like a 7-part, 17 minute long manifesto of instrumental hip-hop. Not only is it a great release in itself, but you can see in it the beginnings of where Shadow's been trying to go with hip-hop, with intelligent use of spoken word and media sampling, the debut of Gift of Gab (from Blackalicious), classic breakbeats and a lot of the moody musical effects that you're familiar with from the Mo'Wax releases.

I think we've still got some copies on vinyl... I'll have to check with Zen. If you like Shadow, he also did about half of the production off of the classic Blackalicious debut, _Melodica_, which I think we only still have on CD and tape (again, I'll have to check). Furthermore, he also did the production on Lateef's new single, The Quickening/The Wreckoning/ Latyrx, which people have been talking about over the last couple months. As for purely instrumental stuff, there's also Fully Charged On Planet X/ Hardcore Instrumental Hip-Hop, which was available both from us and from Mo'Wax - the same music, except that if you bought ours you got better artwork, probably saved a buck or two, and got the satisfaction of knowing that your purchase supported a small, artist-owned independent hip-hop label.

You can check all of this out at our website at www.massive.com/solesides, though the site badly needs to be updated. I'm also working on trying to organize our mailing list and internet contacts... for now you can e-mail me here at this address or e-mail DJ Zen at solesides@aol.com.

2 Dec 1996 - future of hip-hop??

In reply to a post about the future of Hip Hop, Solesides crew member posted the following:[25]

hip-hop will never "die," per se. it will continue to manifest in different forms. hip-hop isn't just music. it's a spirit, a way of doing things, an attitude. hip-hop is re-adjusting your environment to fit your thought, your expression using the materials in that environment, regardless of what those materials are. that spirit will never die. it will always exist. what may not change are our expectations. people already aren't willing to recognize the changes and different forms that it has taken already. people like dj shadow, drum and bass and jungle artists are doing hip-hop, but try telling that to the local kid that thinks mobb deep and tupac are the only voices in the music. it doesn't register. the hip-hop music we hear today may not exist a few years from now, but that's to be expected. the hip-hop of '92 with de la, quest and the jbs in top form -- that hip-hop doesn't exist today. the hip-hop of ultramagnetic, rakim, and bdp -- that hip-hop doesn't exist today. so naturally, the hip-hop people are accustomed to hearing today will not exist in the future. but, again, the spirit will never die. my two bits,

Also, if you are RealAudio ready, there is a preview of the entire album at ADDICTED TO NOISE (www.addict.com). The LATYRX album will be available in stores next week. Check our website for stores and distributors that carry SoleSides releases.

In other news, we regret that we have had to cancel the first four dates of our tour---in Savannah, St. Petersburg, Akron, and Raleigh---for personal reasons. Since the fans, promoters and clubs have all been generous and supportive to us, we will be looking to see if we can reschedule the dates at a future date. All dates on the tour with Jeru are a go.

20 May 1998 - what do you think about the solesides breakup?

Posted by J. Winston Chiong on 30 May 1998, in reply to a post asking about the Solesides label ending[40]

Yeah, it's not really accurate to call it a breakup, since the artists are all still together and planning to work on the Quannum project in about a year or so, after the Blackalicious _Nia_ album drops and also after Shadow's done working on the UNKLE album. Really all that's happened is that the artists felt that running Solesides as a business entity was taking valuable time and energy away from their musical efforts, which was a signal to them that they'd taken Solesides, as a label, as far as they were able to go with it.

Plus, to my knowledge, there are still two Solesides projects in the pipeline to be dropped as Solesides releases... there's another Latyrx project (which is, I think, going to be along the Muzappers theme one last time), and then... Radio Sole 2. So keep checking for those. Also, I think Latyrx is supposed to be touring sometime soon, and if/when I get dates for that I'll be sure to put them up. Of course, if someone up here already has those dates and would like to share them with the rest of the class...

It's taking a bit longer than we thought to get the 2-1/2 hour show together for the net. It's not that we are slack, there's been some technical whatevers...

In case you tried to log on & thought you're browser was tripping, we're sorry. 20 Feb 2002 - OT: QUANNUM NEWS 2.19.02

Posted by nethed (nethed@ninjatune.net) on 20 Feb 2002[46]

Subject: QUANNUM NEWS 2.19.02

Some late breaking news from Quannum HQ, our spies in the UK report that three Poets of Rhythm shows are looming. Check the tour page at www.quannum.com for details on these Poets dates as well as some new ones from Lifesavas.

Blackalicious' Sno-Core tour continues this week up the West Coast, with dates looming in Portland and Seattle shortly. Apologies go out to those of you in Arcata, where yesterday's date was cancelled. If you feel truly wronged, shoot me a heart-wrenching email and I'll see what I can do to make it up to you, I dunno, maybe a poster or something.

As Blackalicious' "Make You Feel That Way" continues to shoot up the radio charts, the group are in LA this week making the video for what is easily one of their best songs yet, with cameos scheduled from Lyrics Born, Joyo Velarde, DJ Shadow and other Quannum VIPs. Despite some very creative suggestions from certain Quannum employees, the video will unfortunately not feature the Gift of Gab riding across the Australian outback in a post-apocolyptic sci-fi adventure. More details on the world of Blackalicious are available at www.blackalicious.com.

Those of you in the Bay Area interested in the prospect of rubbing shoulders with those who rub shoulders with giants will have the opportunity to do so twice this week. First off, there's episode three of Ting!, the monthly rocksteady reggae party thrown by Tomas of XLR8R magazine/Umoja fame and your friendly neighborhood Quannum manager, me. With DJ action from Tomas, Cool Chris of the wondrous Groove Merchant store and special guest Dublinator, previous episodes have featured fine Jamaican tunes from the 70s, heated debates over pool table rules and Red Stripe-induced comradery aplenty. Come dance with your sweetie, drink wine, recline on the couch, flirt with cuties, whatever floats your boat.

The bolder amongst you may be inclined to venture on Sunday to Bigfoot Lounge, where the excellent Flyer Magazine is hosting the second in their new series of Slow Burning fetes, in which DJ neophytes man the decks and spin whatever the hell they feel like. This time, against better judgement perhaps, they've asked yours truly. Be prepared for an exciting mix of all kinds of nerdy stuff. Buy the DJ enough Budweisers and he'll spill the beans about Lyrics Born's hairpiece.
