Template:Zero width joiner/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Zero width joiner. It contains usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
The template {{zero width joiner}} inserts the code <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" id="" style="" inline="1"></syntaxhighlight>, producing a Template:Unichar in the rendered wiki-page. This invisibly 'sews together' two words as if they were a single word, preventing their separation at line breaks. It acts as a {{no-break space}} <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" id="" style="" inline="1"> </syntaxhighlight> except is immaterial and does not display on the page.
Usage
This template can be used, for example, to prevent text to wrap as in:
- something that needs a citation
Template:Fake citation needed
Inserting {{zero width joiner}}
between the text and the tag produces instead:
- A zero width joinerTemplate:Fake citation needed
History
This template used to employ code of the older "Zero-width non-breaking space" that is now outdated, as of Unicode 3.2. Though Unicode suggests a <templatestyles src="smallcaps/styles.css"/>Word Joiner instead, zero-width joiner does practically the same thing and better matches the already-existing {{zwnj}}. An alternative is to simply use the HTML code <syntaxhighlight lang="text" class="" id="" style="" inline="1"></syntaxhighlight> in wikimarkup.
