Basiks - Live on GLR

Revision as of 15:17, 13 May 2020 by Jimmyjrg (talk | contribs)

Basiks was the name of a radio program hosted by James Lavelle in 1996-1997, though the exact dates are unknown. Only three recordings of shows are known to exist, and it is unclear how long the show lasted. Basiks was also the name of a club night hosted by James Lavelle in 1996. GLR was the predecessor to BBC London Radio.[1]

A recording of a show from 1997 was uploaded to the internet by fans in 2017, with Lavelle stating at the start of the show that it is the first show of 1997. He plays two mixes, and then ends by playing the James Lavelle & Mo'Wax Crew ‎"60 Min's Of Mo'Wax Shit" mix which was created by the Psychonauts.[2]

In April 2020 James Lavelle posted a recording of the November 9 1996 show with the following description:

"After years of digging through my archive, I'm really pleased to have finally found a cassette recording of BASIKS, my first radio show on London's GLR (Greater London Radio). This was one of a few shows that aired, recorded on 9th November 1996, it's a great insight to the records that I was playing at the height of Mo' Wax, and clubs like That's How It Is and Dusted. Apologies for the quality near the end, but it's taken from a 24 year old cassette!"[3]

Note, about 6 minutes in to the recording Lavelle mentions he played Mad Professor before Jungle Brothers which suggests this recording is incomplete.
