There are so many records I could have selected for this first part, but I have focused on records that I feel highlight that part of the night, especially in the early days, it was pretty quiet, and allowed me to experiment. I've also focused on tracks that are not so well known, and unavailable on streaming services. I developed my sound within the night, as Giles was already the king of jazz so I had to find my own unique and personal sound."<ref>https://www.facebook.com/unkle/posts/10158327036063149</ref>

In August 2020 James Lavelle and Gilles Peterson were due to play a special That's How It Is session at We Out Here Festival 2020. Unfortunately the festival was cancelled due to a global pandemic and so in May 2020 James Lavelle released the first in a series of mixes celebrating That's How It Is.

Previously Lavelle had hinted that there would be four mixes in the series.

James Lavelle's That's How It Is Def Mix 1: The Warm Up

James Lavelle released this new mix on May 24 2020, via the We Out Here Mixcloud account.[1]

Along with the mix, Lavelle released the following statement:

"That's How It Is was the club I started in the early '90s with Gilles Peterson which took place every Monday night at Bar Rumba on London's Shaftesbury Avenue, in the heart of Soho. I was 18 at the time and had previously been a resident at Talkin' Loud at the Fridge, Kudu at the Gardening Club (with Patrick Forge) and my night in Oxford, Mo' Wax Please. I had also started a column in the influential Straight No Chaser magazine, where the editor Paul Bradshaw suggested Gilles and I should do a night together. Together with his long term collaborator Janine Neye,‏ and Swifty on visuals, we launched the night.

This is part of a series of mixes I've put together representing the time I played at the club. It was one of London's longest running nights (13 years) and I was resident for 7. I have broken the mix up into sections, with the first representing an extended warm up session, where I would play an eclectic selection of classics and more rare and unusual cuts. Joining the dots between soul, jazz, psychedelia, breaks and beats, underground contemporary soul and hip hop records. It's where I shaped the sound that would later be called trip hop. From Japan to Sweden, France to the States; a truly international selection, where many of these records were played in a club for the very first time. It was where the Mo' Wax sound came from and grew. Where everyone from jazz dancers to producers, musicians to ravers, and pop stars to DJs would come and listen to the latest and most eclectic music of the time, and where I have some of my favourite memories as a DJ...

There are so many records I could have selected for this first part, but I have focused on records that I feel highlight that part of the night, especially in the early days, it was pretty quiet, and allowed me to experiment. I've also focused on tracks that are not so well known, and unavailable on streaming services. I developed my sound within the night, as Giles was already the king of jazz so I had to find my own unique and personal sound."[2]

Later, a commentary track was created for Worldwide FM where James Lavelle discussed the songs he selected in the mix. This aired on Worldwide FM on July 10[3] following the re-release of the original mix on Worldwide FM on July 5.

James Lavelle's That's How It Is Def Mix 2: The Mid Session

James Lavelle released this new mix on July 12 2020, via Worldwide FM.[4]

Along with the mix, Worldwide FM provided the following description:

"In the second of a four part series, James Lavelle breaks down ’That’s How It is’, the cult Monday night club institution. For The Mid Session, James showcases the breadth of contemporary and heritage music in rotation at the time, capturing an eclectic environment that brought together jazz dancers, early Mo Wax heads and an established Talkin Loud crew at Bar Rumba."[5]

The mix was accompanied by a seperate "commentary" version which featured James Lavelle talking about this mix. This was released on July 13.[6]
