RHYTHM NATION, by David Prince.

Trip-hop -psychedelic hip-hop music - seems to be the flavor of the moment, with Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky storming the charts. But some of the genre's more exciting and innovative tracks are coming from England's Mo' Wax record label. DJ James Lavelle, the 21-year-old label honcho and A&R man, traces the sound's influence to equal parts tech- no and Jimi Hendrix. with additional reference points being the acid-house explosion of 1988 to '89 and the innovations of Inner City and De La Soul. Prime Mo' Wax cuts include DJ Shadow's "What Does Your Soul Look Like" EP and a double 12-inch by U.N.K.L.E. titled "The Time Has Come: A Tribute To Sun Ra and All Things Fucked-Up." The two-CO "Headz" compilation gives a good overview of the label's output to date; currently available only as an import, Mo' Wax music will hit U.S. soil in August via London Records.
