Fabric October 4 2019 Event Description

Description from Resident Advisor.[3]

James Lavelle curates FABRICLIVE as part of our XX series. Following his live performance as UNKLE: AI for the opening night of our birthday month, Lavelle makes his comeback to our long-running Friday night showcase alongside a team of his own invited guests. The Mo’Wax founder has been a huge part of our history – having joined us as our first FABRICLIVE resident, he was instrumental in shaping the sound of our Fridays in Farringdon for more than five years. For his return to our space, he invites Laurent Garnier to join him. Garnier should need no introduction from us – with an illustrious career spanning more than three decades, he is one of the most influential artists in the history of house and techno. Constantly pushing boundaries, his legendary F Communications label remains a go-to reference point for DJs and producers alike, and his fearless approach behind the decks has shown he’s still at the top of his game today. Room One is rounded off by our own Anna Wall. The London talent has already had a number of killer sets in the space throughout this year, and is set to give another glimpse into her ultra-deep record bag to kick off the proceedings. Room Two celebrates the backbone sound of FABRICLIVE with three drum & bass champions. Roni Size is one of the jungle and drum & bass movement’s original pioneers. In 1997 his ‘New Forms’ LP helped introduce a whole generation to electronic music at 170BPM, and his label Full Cycle is regarded as one of the sound’s benchmark imprints. He’s also one of the genre’s most highly skilled DJs, something we know from his regular appearances with us over the years. Size is joined by another Full Cycle mainstay, DJ Krust. The Bristolian artist is another key figure in the story of FABRICLIVE – from our early beginnings, he was one of our Room Two staples. Still a torch-bearer for innovative drum & bass both in the booth and studio, we welcome him back to showcase his craft the same cavernous spot. Fresh off joining our family officially, Mantra makes her first appearance as a FABRICLIVE resident. There are a number of reasons we’re excited to welcome her into the fold: through her regular Rupture throwdowns, excellent studio productions and world-beating DJ sets, she’s one of the jungle and drum & bass scene’s most vital voices out there today. She rounds off a suitably packed FABRICLIVE bill in celebration of our 20th birthday.

James Lavelle commenting on recording of UNKLE:AI - October 4 2019

After being involved in starting the long running FABRICLIVE night on Fridays at fabriclondon, and being a resident for 5 years, including mixing the first ever fabriclive mix cd, I was asked to curate 2 nights as part of the 20 year anniversary celebrations of the club last year.

For the Thursday night, I put on the second UNKLE:AI show, which had only been seen once before at Selfridges' 'Ultra Lounge’ to a small intimate crowd of 100 competition winners, based on a similar aesthetic to the UNKLE Sounds show, which had had its first residency at Fabric. UNKLE:AI was an immersive visual DJ and small studio-based installation where, together with my long term touring and studio collaborator Steven Weston, we would remix and edit UNKLE tracks and remixes for more of a club-orientated environment. Together with visual artist Patrick Krause, we built a sculptural tower-like installation setup in the centre of the dancefloor, so the crowd could view the experience from 360 degrees, below and above, due to the stage and mezzanine in room one. The installation pulsated with light and lasers in a room full of haze were performed on the top of the installation... It created an amazing atmosphere where the crowd really let go, rather that face a typical performance on the stage, making the experience totally unique and intimate. Apart from a few technical problems, which have been edited out and replaced, it was a very special night for me, and really great to be back at Fabric after all these years (10 years to the week) in a club that has had such a profound impact on my DJ and musical career.[4]
